My Top 5 Picks for September

Fall has officially begun, and the temps are finally reflecting that, as well. It is my favorite time of year with cooler temps, warming and comforting foods, and changing colors.

We’ve added some new groceries this past month that we have already put on heavy rotation. Lots of great products for lunch boxes, quick and easy breakfast ideas, and comforting side dishes with that autumn vibe. Check out our New to Bean section in the store to see what’s new and exciting!

Beasley’s Orchard

Local apples from Beasley’s have been rolling through our store since the end of August. They are fresh, tree ripened, and bursting with flavor. We have been buying every variety that we’ve had in the store each week. My kids are obsessed with apples! Currently, we are carrying Ambrosia, Cortland, Gala, Gingergold, Honey Crisp, and Jonathon. All are offered in a 2-pound bag and the Honey Crisp are available as a case, as well.

We also have their delicious Apple Cider! Besides pressing it yourself (which I know you aren’t going to do), this is the BEST apple cider I’ve ever had. We are selling it by the gallon and in a two-pack. Apple cider is super tasty to drink but it can also be incorporated into many dishes like apple cider donuts, or as a sauce for pork dishes, winter squash soups, and to make some of the best smoked meat. The cider won’t last long so get it while you can! Also, it can be frozen so you can use it later.

Birch Benders

A new vendor to our store, Birch Benders, makes pancakes that are better than at a restaurant and easier than from scratch. If we have a weekend morning that we aren’t rushing off to some sporting event, then we are making pancakes. I make a huge batch so we can enjoy them for breakfast throughout the week, too. We added their Classic Pancake and Waffle Mix and their Gluten Free Pancake and Waffle Mix. All you need is water—no eggs or milk necessary! They make the fluffiest and tastiest pancakes imaginable.

Bob’s Red Mill

Awhile back, we had a miss-shipment of Gluten Free Cornbread Mix from Bob’s Red Mill. I took it home and made it that night. The whole family absolutely loved it, and I knew our members would too! Bob’s Red Mill always has high quality and tasty products. This cornbread mix allows you to make “made from scratch” quality cornbread in a matter of minutes (excluding baking time). We have made it as cornbread and as muffins. We love to serve it along side smoked meats, chili, and hearty soups. The kids will even warm it up and eat it for breakfast with some over-easy eggs. We have both their original Cornbread and Muffin Mix and their gluten free version too.

Brown Cow

When I lived in the Snoqualmie Valley outside of Seattle, I commuted into the city every day for work. I would stop by the PCC Co-op every morning to grab my breakfast. A fresh juice of carrots and beets, a morning glory muffin, and a cup of Brown Cow Chocolate Cream Top Yogurt. I was a little excited, to say the least, when we decided to add it to our store. It took me down memory lane and, sure enough, it still tastes as good as I remember it. Thick and creamy yogurt with essentially a chocolate pudding layer. Rich, decadent, dessert-like, and perfect in every way possible. Great for breakfast but also a perfect lunch box add-in or afternoon snack.

The Good Crisp Company

We discovered this brand while on vacation one spring break. We bought a couple large tubes of the potato crisps and were hooked ever since. The Good Crisp Company makes Stacked Crisps (potato crisps) and Cheese Balls that are made using clean and simple ingredients. Our favorite flavor is the Outback BBQ, but we are equally excited about the mini canisters in Classic and Sour Cream and Onion. My littlest loves the mini canisters because they are the most perfect amount for him at lunchtime. And the bigs like them for a perfectly portioned snack.
