Good morning and happy Saturday!
Are you someone who has a dietary restriction? Maybe not you, but someone in your family? Dietary restrictions can be related to allergies, sensitivities, philosophical reasons or religion. Restricting or cutting out certain foods can be extremely difficult, especially when this way of eating is new to you, but over time, navigating through this new way of eating becomes easier and second nature.
Fortunately, over the years, more and more retail products are being made that cater to those living with food restrictions. This makes it easier to find alternatives to the products you love which can make eating a bit more “normal”.
As we have been adding more products to our store, we have been thinking about those who do live with dietary restrictions and are choosing more products that can help them live a more “normal” life as it relates to food.
Me and my daughter are lactose intolerant. This means we cannot digest the sugar, lactose, that is found in dairy products. This is a new diagnosis for my daughter, who is 8, and it has been a bit of an adjustment for her. In her mind, she is screaming–no more pizza, macaroni and cheese, or my favorite waffles! And, I’m over here trying to calm her down and tell her about alternatives to some of her favorite dairy foods. Whether this is eating raw milk cheese from Ludwig Farmstead Creamery or Organic Valley (we carry 3 varieties) or drinking milk from low-vat pasteurized milk from Hartzler’s, she can still enjoy her favorite foods.
And just this week, we started carrying Green Valley Creamery! They make delicious lactose free dairy–yogurt, kefir, cream cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese, and butter. Finding this product was heaven to me! I love love love yogurt and kefir and finally I could enjoy these products again without any pain. All their products are made with simple, clean, and a minimal amount of ingredients. They are also certified organic and FODMAP friendly certified (they are the first real dairy brand in the US to be certified FODMAP friendly). They taste great and you don’t need to be lactose intolerant to enjoy them!
Gluten free products are the most popular type of “specialty food” that people are seeking out to buy. This isn’t a surprise since anywhere between 1 in 100 to 1 in 300 have celiac disease. This is an autoimmune disease that creates inflammation that damages the small intestine’s lining when the person consumes gluten containing foods. Plus, there are many people who are sensitive or intolerant to gluten who experience anything from headaches, joint pain, fatigue, or gut pain. With the prevalence of celiac so high and increasing each year, there has been a mad rush by the food industry to create gluten free foods. It is much easier today to eat gluten free than it was just 5 years ago.
Taste Republic is RP’s Pasta Company’s gluten free line of fresh pasta. The variety we offer is made with brown rice. It is light, delicate, cooks up in 3 minutes, and very tasty! Honestly, you wouldn’t know it was gluten free. And since it is fresh pasta, they are pair perfectly with seasonal spring veggies and a light sauce to make a quick, week night meal.
Feel Good Foods
Feel Good Foods makes gluten free, frozen foods that are nourishing and chef inspired. They make for a perfect party snack or the start of a healthy lunch! We currently sell their taquitos, potstickers, and eggrolls. And, coming real soon, we will have their empanadas and another variety of potstickers—chicken. I love their products because they are quick to prepare, made with quality ingredients, and they taste good! My kids absolutely love their pork potstickers and eat them at least once a week in their lunches. They also offer dairy free, soy free, and vegan options so there is something for everyone!
The most popular weight loss diet searched for on the internet is the keto diet. It is an extremely low or no carbohydrate diet that forces the body into a state of ketosis. This causes the body is use fat for energy and thus creating weight loss.
The paleo diet can also help with weight loss, but its biggest benefit comes from reducing inflammation in the body. This helps those with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s/dementia, celiac, multiple sclerosis, and many other autoimmune or chronic diseases.
A grain free diet is usually followed by those who have digestive problems such as celiac, IBS, ulcerative colitis, or crohn’s disease. A grain free diet can help to heal a leaky gut and improve digestive related pains/discomforts for those who live with these debilitating diseases.
Siete Family Foods was born when co-founder and President, Veronica Garza, was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases and needed to go on a grain-free diet. She comes from a Mexican-American family from South Texas where corn and flour tortillas were the basis of their cuisine. We sell their tortillas, tortilla chips and hot sauce which are all grain free. We have served their products at parties and nobody knows they are grain free and not made with flour or corn. In fact, their products are so good that people often ask what it is and where they can buy it!
