Homemade Pear Butter

I have really good intentions when it comes to eating fruit, but often fall short during the cooler months. This goes back to my Ayurvedic dosha of being a vata. Fruit, when cold outside, tends to make my digestion unhappy—except when cooked! I love adding apples and pears to my root roasts, and making apple and pear butter. Here is a simple recipe on how to make pear butter from 5 ingredients. Low in sugar but packed with flavor. Enjoy!


Step 1: Peel, core, and chop the pears and add to a large sauce pan. Peel the ginger, slice, and add to the pears. Add the cinnamon sticks, a pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons maple syrup sugar (you can use regular maple syrup, as well).


Step 2: Heat over medium heat, smashing contents with a potato masher until boiling. Reduce to a simmer and cover. Allow to cook down, stirring occasionally until it looks like a paste, 2 1/2-3 hours.


Step 3: Remove the cinnamon sticks and add the pear butter to a food processor.


Step 4: Blend until smooth.


Step 5: Yields one perfectly filled to the top 8 ounce glass jar. Enjoy on toast or muffins, or add to marinades or sauces.
